Yerevan, Armenia – March 14, 2025 – In a highly unusual and thought-provoking competition held earlier this week, Armenia’s Women Empowerment Team faced a surprising defeat at the hands of Armenia’s Strong Men Team. The competition, which was run as a poll among followers on social media, pitted two very different images against each other: one showcasing a strong, masculine man portrayed as a protector in the jungle, and another displaying a sensual image of a woman enjoying wine.

The poll, which generated significant online buzz, was designed to highlight societal ideals surrounding masculinity, femininity, and empowerment. However, despite the Women Empowerment Team’s strong advocacy for gender equality, the vote saw the masculine image of the Strong Men Team garner more support from the public.

The competition sparked an important conversation about the pressures and perceptions of gender roles in Armenia. Many supporters of the Women Empowerment Team expressed their disappointment, citing the poll’s reductionist framing of the concept of empowerment. Critics argued that the “sexy photo with wine” stereotype reinforced narrow, outdated views of women, whereas the image of the protector reflected traditional expectations placed upon men.

“The loss in this competition is a reminder of the work that still needs to be done to challenge traditional norms and push for true gender equality,” added the spokesperson for the Women Empowerment Team. “Empowerment is not about choosing between a masculine ideal or a glamorous image of femininity. It’s about celebrating every person’s strength, individuality, and ability to break free from societal constraints.”

Despite the loss, the Women Empowerment Team remains determined to continue their mission of promoting gender equality in Armenia. They believe that moments like this reveal how deeply ingrained stereotypes continue to shape public opinion.

“We are committed to shifting the narrative and creating a future where both men and women are free to define themselves without limitations,” added Nona.

As the debate surrounding the competition continues, the Women Empowerment Team encourages the public to engage in deeper conversations about gender, identity, and the images that shape our perceptions of strength and beauty.

Why Toxic Feminism is Harmful: A Closer Look

Feminism, in its purest form, is a movement for gender equality. It aims to challenge and dismantle patriarchal structures that have historically oppressed women. It advocates for equal rights in areas such as education, employment, healthcare, and politics. However, in recent years, there has been a shift toward what some term “toxic feminism,” a form of the movement that deviates from its core principles. Toxic feminism often prioritizes women’s experiences while diminishing or ignoring the struggles of men and other marginalized groups, fostering divisiveness rather than unity. In this essay, we will explore why toxic feminism is harmful and how it undermines the true spirit of equality and justice.

1. Promotes Division Rather Than Unity

One of the central tenets of feminism is the idea that all genders should be equal, yet toxic feminism often fosters division between men and women. This version of feminism tends to focus on demonizing men, painting them as the enemy or as inherently oppressive. It creates an “us vs. them” mentality, which is counterproductive to the goal of equality. Instead of focusing on cooperation between genders to build a more just society, toxic feminism breeds resentment and antagonism. By painting all men with the same broad brush, it undermines the very foundation of feminism—equality for all.

The harsh rhetoric often seen in toxic feminism can alienate potential allies, including men who want to be part of the movement for gender equality. Feminism should aim to create an inclusive environment where people of all genders can come together to support one another’s rights. By focusing only on women’s struggles and disregarding those of men, toxic feminism strengthens harmful gender stereotypes and discourages men from engaging in meaningful conversations about equality.

2. Ignores the Struggles of Men

Toxic feminism often dismisses the very real struggles that men face in today’s society. For example, men are disproportionately affected by certain issues such as higher rates of suicide, violence, workplace deaths, and homelessness. Yet, these issues are rarely addressed in toxic feminist discourse. Instead, the focus is overwhelmingly on issues that affect women, which is important, but should not come at the cost of disregarding the suffering of men.

Feminism, at its core, is about equality, not about elevating one gender at the expense of the other. A healthy feminist movement acknowledges and addresses the issues that affect both women and men, while also understanding that gender inequality impacts individuals in different ways. By ignoring men’s issues, toxic feminism perpetuates the myth that men do not need support or attention, further isolating men from discussions about gender equality.

3. Perpetuates Gender Stereotypes

Toxic feminism can reinforce harmful gender stereotypes instead of breaking them down. For example, it often portrays women as helpless victims and men as privileged oppressors, reinforcing the notion that women are powerless without the help of feminism. This narrative simplifies complex social dynamics and overlooks the unique ways in which different individuals experience oppression.

This rigid portrayal of gender roles can be damaging to both women and men. Women are often depicted as perpetual victims who cannot succeed without external help, which undermines their agency and autonomy. Similarly, men are framed as inherently oppressive, which erodes the possibility of positive, healthy relationships between men and women. Toxic feminism disregards the diversity of human experience, reducing people to one-dimensional caricatures rather than acknowledging the multifaceted nature of gender identity and social inequality.

4. Undermines Positive Masculinity

Toxic feminism’s tendency to demonize men does a disservice to the concept of positive masculinity. Instead of encouraging men to embrace healthy emotional expression, vulnerability, and nurturing qualities, toxic feminism often condemns traditional masculine traits without acknowledging their potential for good. Toxic masculinity, which is sometimes conflated with all expressions of masculinity, refers to harmful behaviors that prioritize dominance, emotional suppression, and aggression. However, toxic feminism often paints all men with this broad brush, ignoring the fact that many men engage in positive, constructive ways of expressing masculinity.

The promotion of healthy masculinity is essential in fostering a more equitable society. Men, too, should feel free to explore different aspects of their identity without fear of judgment or repression. Toxic feminism, by categorizing all masculinity as toxic, strips away the opportunity for men to redefine their roles and engage with vulnerability, empathy, and compassion. A healthy feminist movement would encourage men to embrace positive masculinity, while also promoting emotional intelligence and healthy relationships for all genders.

5. Encourages Victimhood Mentality

One of the most damaging aspects of toxic feminism is its tendency to encourage a victimhood mentality. In toxic feminist circles, women are often portrayed as helpless victims of patriarchal oppression who are powerless to effect change without external intervention. While it is important to recognize that women have historically faced discrimination and continue to face gender-based challenges, focusing exclusively on victimhood fails to empower women to take control of their own lives and destinies.

A healthy feminist movement encourages women to stand up for their rights, cultivate resilience, and challenge the systems that oppress them. Rather than focusing on perpetual victimhood, feminism should promote self-empowerment and action. Empowering women means recognizing their strength and agency, not reducing them to perpetual victims of circumstance. Toxic feminism, by glorifying victimhood, inadvertently disempowers women and prevents them from becoming agents of change.

6. Diminishes the Importance of Intersectionality

Toxic feminism often fails to recognize the importance of intersectionality—the concept that different forms of oppression, such as racism, classism, and ableism, intersect and compound one another. By focusing primarily on the experiences of middle-class white women, toxic feminism neglects the experiences of women of color, working-class women, and women from marginalized communities. This lack of intersectionality leads to an incomplete and exclusionary version of feminism that does not adequately represent the diversity of women’s experiences.

True feminism must be intersectional, acknowledging the different ways in which race, class, disability, and other factors shape a person’s experience of oppression. By failing to include these experiences in the feminist conversation, toxic feminism alienates many women and undermines the movement’s potential for meaningful social change. An inclusive feminist movement should uplift the voices of all women, especially those who face multiple forms of discrimination.

7. Disregards Men’s Role in Feminism

Toxic feminism tends to alienate men from the feminist movement, fostering the misconception that men are not welcome in the conversation about gender equality. This exclusionary approach reduces the likelihood of men becoming allies and advocates for gender equality. Feminism, in its true form, is not about excluding men, but about creating a society where both men and women have equal rights and opportunities.

Men play a crucial role in dismantling patriarchy and fighting for gender equality. Feminism should not just be about women advocating for their own rights but also about men recognizing and challenging the systems of oppression that harm both women and themselves. By excluding men from the conversation, toxic feminism limits the movement’s potential to create real societal change.

Conclusion

While feminism, at its core, is a necessary and transformative movement for gender equality, toxic feminism represents a distortion of these principles. By promoting division, ignoring men’s struggles, perpetuating stereotypes, and disregarding intersectionality, toxic feminism undermines the very goals it seeks to achieve. The true essence of feminism lies in empowering all individuals—regardless of gender—by promoting mutual respect, understanding, and equality. To create a fairer, more just society, it is essential to reject toxic feminism and instead embrace a feminism that is inclusive, empowering, and focused on positive social change for all.
